Welcome to the San Diego Chapter of IMA
Dear members and friends of San Diego IMA,
Good news! As of the end of September, the San Diego Chapter is in the top ten of large chapters in the annual Chapter Competition. The Competition measures accomplishments in the key areas of membership growth, CPE participation, Certifications awarded, CMA exam parts passed, and member service. This reflects the contributions and creativity of our terrific volunteers and the support of you, our members.
At our last Chapter Board meeting, we discussed some of our accomplishments over the past year and started making plans for the future and I wanted to share them with all of you.
In early 2019, we reformulated our Chapter Board and were able to attract several new volunteers. A highlight of the year was six very successful meetings in our Controllers Council lunchtime CPE series. Topics included auditing cryptocurrencies and blockchain, an economics update, two hours of ethics, a GAAP update, current events in HR regulations and ERP implementation. Thanks as always to CBIZ for their support of the Controllers Council. We also had two dinner meetings in a new venue at the EY offices near UTC. At these meetings topics included privacy laws and regulations and accounting for big data.
Also of note, during the year the Chapter was able to arrange tours of Kontron America (thanks to Tim Revers) and Illumina (thanks to Ping Ying) and actively supported Accounting Day in May. Our members supported student presentations at Cal State San Marcos, Mira Costa College and Miramar College and represented IMA at the “Meet the Firms” day at USD.
We will be holding a planning meeting in January to set the programs for the coming year. Coming up in 2020, we plan to continue the Controllers Council series. We’re planning on hosting an evening networking event in February and look for other opportunities for our members to make and grow professional connections. Also in February will be our annual Student Night at the University of San Diego. There will be no cost for students to attend Student Night, and students from any school are welcome! Watch for more details in early January.
We will also be providing opportunities to learn about the CMA and CSCA Certifications, conducting more plant tours and exploring other opportunities for members to network and earn CPE. We will continue to actively support students in the San Diego area. Please consider volunteering to help plan and execute these programs. We can tailor opportunities to your interests and available time. Volunteering with the chapter can be a great way to build networking relationships, build and practice leadership skills and give back to the management accounting profession. Feel free to contact me via the chapter email firstname.lastname@example.org or through MyIMA Network so we can schedule a time to talk about how you can contribute.
I wish everyone a happy holiday season and a happy and prosperous New Year!
President, San Diego Chapter, IMA
