Welcome to the San Diego Chapter of IMA
Dear members and friends of San Diego IMA,
Happy February! This may be the shortest month, but he chapter is making the most of the time available.
As you know, the chapter did not hold a meeting in January to give everyone time to focus on year-end closing and gearing up for tax season. February started the year off right with a Controller’s Council Human Resources update from Tom Daugherty of the Klinedinst PC Law Firm. Tom covered the latest news on AB-5 the independent contractor vs. employee law that went into effect on January 1. He also covered several new laws and revisions to existing laws that we need to be aware of. Chapter Social Media Director Juventino Gaytan opened the meeting by showing everyone how to use LinkedIn’s My Network feature to find potential contacts who are nearby via Bluetooth.
That same day we held our quarterly chapter planning meeting at Aerotek. In that meeting we were updated on campus outreach activities being led by Dan Goldzband. We spent a great deal of time discussing volunteer responsibilities for the coming year and encouraging more chapter members to volunteer some time to help with our programs. Chapter VP of Communications Pem Smith has put together a document describing each position on the board, which he has posted on the chapter website (https://sandiego.imanet.org/aboutchapter/chapterboard). Volunteering is a great way to expand your professional network, practice leadership skills and give something back to the management accounting profession.
At the board meeting, we also explored opportunities to resume having evening meetings in addition to the Controllers Council lunches. The board will be continuing research on the feasibility and demand for additional CPE opportunities. Part of the research will be looking into different formats and the possibility of offering CPE online. Feel free to send me your thoughts through the chapter email below.
We also discussed scheduling a social/networking event, probably in the summertime.
Rounding out our busy February was another very successful Student Night at the University of San Diego. Over fifty students and professional members attended to hear a panel of CMAs – Alex Eng, Creusa Gilmore, Dan Goldzband and Gregg Landers describe accounting careers in industry and the importance of certification and continuing education. Thanks to Mark Judd at USD for organizing this event and moderating the panel.
Coming up in March will be a Controllers Council lunch meeting on the topic of the California Consumer Privacy Act. The chapter board voted to continue offering these CPE opportunities at no cost to our members. Space is somewhat limited, so be sure to sign up early on our Events page.
Also in March, the board will be meeting to finalize nominations for the chapter year that begins May 1. This meeting is scheduled for 4:30 on Tuesday, March 24th.
Watch our Events page for future Controllers Council dates and topics, details on the summer social event and other chapter news.
Thank you for your support to the IMA and the San Diego Chapter.
