Welcome to the San Diego Chapter of IMA

When I joined IMA, someone told me that to get the most out of organizations you join, you
need to be actively involved. At the first chapter meeting I attended, I asked how I could do that
and found out they needed someone to help with distribution of the monthly printed
newsletter (it was a while ago). Each year, I was able to take on a little more responsibility in
helping the chapter serve our members. As the years went by, I have had the opportunity to
serve in a variety of roles first in the local chapter, then the Wild West Regional Council, and the
IMA Global Board and various committees.

What did I get out of all this volunteering? First and foremost, I made a lot of really good friends
among the volunteers and IMA staff I worked with, many of whom are still in my network. I feel
that over the years I contributed in some way to the success and growth of IMA, giving
something back to my profession. As a life-long learner, I learned about corporate governance,
non-profit boards, volunteer leadership, strategic planning, and organizational dynamics.

IMA is structured to depend on volunteers and member engagement at all levels. If you want to
get the most out of your IMA membership in terms of your career and personal development, I
encourage you to find an appropriate opportunity and give volunteering a try. The only
requirements to serve are IMA membership in good standing, high ethical standards, and ability to
work collaboratively with others.

I think you’ll be glad if you do.
